Khunti: A renewed call of “Ulgulan” has emerged in Khunti, signalling a growing movement among Adivasi communities to protect their cultural identity and traditions. The region, historically associated with Birsa Munda, is witnessing fresh mobilisation rooted in heritage and rights.
The movement is being led by Nisha Oraon, under whose leadership priests, intellectuals, social workers and local residents have come together in large numbers. Participants have collectively resolved to safeguard their traditions, culture and identity amid ongoing challenges.
During the protest, a delegation submitted a memorandum to district administration, raising concerns related to religious and cultural recognition of Sarna community. Protesters said tribal groups have long faced difficulties in preserving their distinct identity and that a united effort is now necessary to address these issues.
Community leaders emphasised that Sarna followers do not seek separation from mainstream society but want to coexist while ensuring protection of their customs and rights. They underlined that development must go hand in hand with preservation of cultural identity.
The movement draws symbolic strength from Khunti’s historical legacy, where Birsa Munda had once launched the “Ulgulan” against British rule. Locals say this renewed mobilisation is not merely a protest but a broader effort to reconnect with roots and secure cultural heritage for future generations.
