Jamshedpur: A fierce surge in temperatures gripped Jharkhand on Wednesday, pushing several districts into intense heat conditions, with Daltonganj emerging as the hottest spot in the state at a blistering 42.6°C.
The India Meteorological Department’s evening bulletin from Ranchi indicated a sharp and widespread rise in day temperatures, signalling the onset of a prolonged hot spell across the region.
Jamshedpur too reeled under the heat, recording a high of 40.2°C, breaching the 40-degree mark and amplifying discomfort in the industrial hub.
Ranchi registered 37.8°C, notably above normal, while Bokaro stood at 38.2°C.
Despite slight variations, most locations reported positive departures from seasonal averages, underlining a broad-based warming trend.
Minimum temperatures offered little relief, with Jamshedpur logging 24.4°C, while Ranchi and Daltonganj recorded relatively cooler nights at 19.9°C and 19.1°C respectively.
However, the overall pattern reflected rising thermal stress, particularly during daytime hours.
Notably, no rainfall was recorded across key weather stations between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, allowing heat to build unchecked.
Data from Automated Weather Stations further highlighted the intensity, with Seraikela at 40.6°C, Palamu at 40.3°C, and several other districts, including Godda, Pakur and Hazaribagh, hovering close to 39°C.
The prevailing conditions point to a developing heatwave-like scenario, especially across western and southern Jharkhand.
The sharp spike in Daltonganj’s temperature—three degrees above normal—underscores the severity of the heat, while Jamshedpur’s crossing of the 40°C threshold reflects escalating discomfort in densely populated and industrial areas.
“With the sun blazing overhead, stepping out even for a short while feels exhausting. The heat this year seems harsher and more persistent,” said a Jamshedpur resident, capturing the growing unease among citizens.
With no immediate signs of rainfall and temperatures continuing to stay above normal, the heat spell is expected to persist over the coming days.
Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
